1. Variable speed drive (VSD):
Reduce the speed of the motor fan to achieve the requirement of reducing flow. Such as mechanical variable speed drive: hydraulic clutch, hydraulic coupling, adjustable belt and pulley; electric variable speed drive, eddy current clutch, wound rotor, motor controller and variable frequency drive (VFD: change the rotation speed of the motor by adjusting the frequency of the accompanying power supply)
Advantages: perfect and efficient flow control method. It allows the fan speed to be adjusted in a continuous range; it can be added with a variable frequency drive, which can effectively and easily control the flow and improve the efficiency of the fan under a wide range of working conditions; it can be retrofitted to existing motors; compact; no scaling problems; reduce energy losses and costs by reducing the overall system cost.
Disadvantages: Mechanical variable speed drives have scaling problems; investment costs may be an obstacle.
2. Disc throttle valve:
The sliding throttle valve can change the width of the impeller exposed to the air flow.
Advantages: simple design
Disadvantages: only feasible in certain applications.
3. Run fans in parallel:
Two or more fans in parallel, rather than one large fan.
Advantages: High efficiency system requirements across a wide range of variations; Small redundancy to mitigate risk of downtime due to failure or unexpected maintenance; Two small fans are cheaper and provide better performance; Can be equipped with other flow controls for increased flexibility and reliability.
Disadvantages: This should only be used on fans operating at low and medium resistance
