Knowledge! How Does a Baghouse Dust Collector Enhance Air Purification Efficiency?

Posted on 2025-01-09

Baghouse dust collectors have become an essential component in industrial air purification systems, especially in the application of dry sorbent injection technology. This technology not only effectively captures particulate matter but also plays a significant role in removing harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO₂) from flue gases. So, how does this technology work, and why is it widely adopted in industries like power generation and waste incineration?

1.The Working Principle of Baghouse Collectors and Dry Sorbent Injection

Dry sorbent injection is a compound purification technology that involves injecting a dry, powdered sorbent—such as sodium bicarbonate or trona—into the flue gas before it enters the baghouse dust collector. The sorbent reacts with SO₂, forming solid particles that are subsequently captured by the baghouse.

The injection points can be located either upstream of the furnace or at the baghouse inlet. The chemical reactions can take place in the gas stream or on the filter bag surface. The dust cake formed on the filter surface not only further purifies SO₂ but also enhances overall purification efficiency.

2.Unique Advantages of Baghouse Collectors in Dry Sorbent Injection

Baghouse collectors excel in dry sorbent injection applications due to their ability to enhance chemical reactions on the filter bag surface, where the accumulated dust cake provides additional surface area for SO₂ removal.

Numerous experimental studies have demonstrated the superior performance of baghouse collectors in various scenarios. For instance, in a coal-fired boiler experiment, a 22 MW boiler burning low-sulfur coal achieved a 70% SO₂ removal rate by injecting natural trona or sodium bicarbonate at a flue gas temperature of 135–138°C.

Continuous injection was found suitable for large-scale operations, while batch injection offered flexibility for adjusting operating conditions. Temperature was identified as a critical factor, with sorbent efficiency significantly decreasing below 135°C.

Compared to electrostatic precipitators, baghouse collectors stand out due to their ability to retain unreacted sorbent on the filter bag surface. This enables a secondary reaction between the sorbent and SO₂ as the flue gas passes through, greatly improving overall efficiency.

3.Challenges and Future Development Trends

Despite the high efficiency of baghouse collectors combined with dry sorbent injection technology, certain challenges remain. Sorbent supply, for example, is limited by the lack of large-scale extraction of sodium bicarbonate and trona, despite their abundant reserves in the U.S. Additionally, the disposal of sodium-rich waste materials requires further environmental considerations.

Baghouse dust collectors are indispensable in modern air pollution control. By integrating dry sorbent injection technology, they offer a reliable solution for the removal of particulate matter and harmful gases, significantly contributing to cleaner industrial emissions. With advancements in material science and engineering, their applications will continue to expand, ensuring a sustainable future for industrial air purification.
