Common Reasons for Frequency Limitation in Variable Frequency Air Conditioners

Posted on 2024-09-20

In variable frequency air conditioners (VFACs), the compressor speed can be adjusted as needed. Normally, when the indoor temperature deviates significantly from the set temperature, the VFAC operates at a higher frequency (i.e., faster speed) to quickly reach the desired temperature. As it approaches the set temperature, the frequency decreases, slowing down the operation. The common reasons for frequency limitation include:

1. **Evaporator High/Low Temperature Limitation**: When the VFAC detects that the evaporator temperature is too low, it limits the compressor's operating frequency. This is primarily to prevent frost or ice formation on the evaporator surface and protect the compressor from issues like liquid return.

2. **Condenser High Temperature Limitation**: When outdoor temperatures are extremely high or when the condenser has poor heat dissipation (e.g., due to dust accumulation), the condensing pressure increases, leading to higher discharge temperatures and increased energy consumption. In this case, the control system automatically reduces the compressor frequency to decrease refrigerant flow and maintain safe condensing temperatures.

3. **High Compressor Discharge Temperature Limitation**: If the temperature of the gas discharged by the compressor exceeds the set value, it may indicate issues like insufficient lubrication or improper refrigerant charging. Prolonged operation under these conditions can damage the compressor. Therefore, when abnormal discharge temperatures are detected, the system will reduce the frequency to cool down and attempt to restore normal conditions.

4. **Current Limitation**: In some cases, unstable power supply or significant voltage fluctuations can cause difficulties in motor startup or sudden increases in load, leading to current exceeding the motor's rated value. To prevent motor burnout, the control system will automatically adjust the output power, thereby reducing the compressor speed when abnormal current is detected.

5.**Voltage Limitation**: Unstable supply voltage significantly impacts electrical equipment, especially for variable frequency air conditioners that require precise control. When the voltage provided by the power grid falls below or exceeds the normal range, it not only affects the system's performance but can also damage electronic components. Therefore, when faced with inadequate power conditions, the air conditioning system will automatically adjust the compressor's operating frequency to adapt to the current electrical status.

6. **PFC Failure Limitation**: The Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuit is used to improve energy conversion efficiency during the process of converting AC to DC and to reduce harmonic distortion. If the PFC function fails, it will lead to decreased efficiency in the entire electrical system and potential safety hazards. In such cases, the air conditioning controller will implement frequency limitation strategies to ensure safe operation even without optimal power factor.

7. **Abnormal Indoor/Outdoor Electrical Control System**: Issues such as circuit short circuits, component failures, or software errors can lead to misjudgments about the current state, prompting frequency limitation measures to avoid potential risks. Problems with the power supply or controller in the outdoor unit can impact the operation of key devices like the compressor and fan motor.

8.**Temperature Sensing Devices**: Temperature sensing devices (temperature sensors) are used to monitor the actual temperatures of the evaporator, condenser, or other areas and provide feedback to the control system. If a temperature sensor malfunctions, it may mislead the control system into believing the evaporator is too cold, triggering the frequency limitation protection mechanism, even when the actual environment is normal. The typical solution is to replace the faulty sensing device and recalibrate the entire temperature control loop.

9. **Refrigeration System Pressure Abnormality**: The refrigerant must maintain appropriate pressure levels during the cycle; both excessively high and low pressures can impact system operation. Pressure sensors continuously monitor this parameter, and if abnormalities are detected, the system will automatically reduce the operating frequency to prevent damage to the compressor. Possible causes include refrigerant leakage, improper charging, or line blockages.

By understanding these common reasons for frequency limitation in variable frequency air conditioners, users can better manage their systems and ensure efficient operation.
